The Hochwald holiday region has plenty to offer holidaymakers in terms of things to do, but we want to spread our wings a bit further and show you a selection of things worth doing in our neighbouring areas. Further tips can be found by visiting our tourist information centre.
If you want to climb up to the Erbeskopf, the highest point in Rhineland-Pfalz, explore one of the many castle ruins and look for the ghosts that still haunt them, walk along the dizzying Geierlay bridge, the most beautiful hanging-rope bridge in Germany, or learn more about typical Hunsrück villages with their attractive half-timbered houses, then the Hochwald holiday region is the right place for you, because all this is just a short trip away from Hunsrück in our neighbouring regions.
Our holiday region lies just a few short kilometres from the gates of the oldest city in Germany, the Roman city of Trier, which with a total of eight UNESCO World Heritage sites is an absolute must-see www.trier-info.de
It’s not just Trier which can boast of cultural offerings worth visiting though, you can also experience history and culture on the other side of the border with Luxembourg. www.lcto.lu/de
If you want to delve a bit deeper into our beautiful region, then you can literally do just that by visiting one of the visitor mines, because a whole other world awaits you deep under the ground at the slate quarry in Fell (www.bergwerk-fell.de) as well as at the historic copper mine in nearby Fischbach (www.besucherbergwerk-fischbach.de) – and the best thing about it is that they are only half an hour away by car.
The ceramic museum in Mettlach with Keravision, the aviation museum in Hermeskeil and World Heritage Site of the Völklingen Ironworks each give visitors a unique experience in their own way. Come, enjoy and be amazed, and drink a coffee inside a real Concorde at the aviation museum, see some industrial history up close at the ironworks in Völklingen and learn about a company in Mettlach which over the course of its 250-year history has become a global enterprise, whose porcelain and ceramic products can be found in shopping centres in major cities all over the world.
